In an important development for motorists, authorities have launched a large-scale crackdown against vehicles using fake and tampered number plates, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect violations.
According to the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO), more than 1,000 vehicles have been penalized for number plate violations during the past 48 hours alone. The action was carried out under the CTO’s direct instructions with the support of advanced AI-based monitoring systems.

The CTO revealed that 73 vehicles fitted with fake number plates were specifically identified through AI technology and taken into legal custody. He made it clear that no leniency will be shown to those involved in altering, tampering with, or using counterfeit registration plates.
Meanwhile, Safe City Authority CEO Dr. Athar Waheed stated that round-the-clock monitoring of vehicles with suspicious or fake number plates is underway. He said that modern surveillance cameras and AI systems are being used to instantly identify such vehicles across the city.
Authorities have also issued orders to register FIRs against drivers found using fake or tampered number plates. In addition, legal action will be taken against shopkeepers involved in manufacturing or selling counterfeit number plates.
The CTO urged citizens to ensure that their vehicle number plates strictly comply with the approved design issued by the Excise and Taxation Department, warning that failure to do so may result in fines, legal cases, or vehicle seizure.
Officials say the use of AI technology will further strengthen traffic enforcement and help curb crimes linked to unregistered or illegally modified vehicles.
