The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has revealed detailed plans for the upcoming 5G spectrum auction, officially known as the Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS) auction, slated for 2026. This auction marks a crucial step in Pakistan’s journey toward widespread 5G connectivity.

Pakistan Sets Stage for 5G Spectrum Auction in 2026

Spectrum Bands & Lots for Auction

A total of 597.2 MHz of spectrum below 6 GHz will be offered to mobile operators through a structured multi-band auction. Six frequency bands will be included:

  • 700 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, 3500 MHz

  • Both Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) bands will be available.

  • Some bands like 700 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz, and 3500 MHz will be available to Pakistani operators for the first time.

PTA has divided the spectrum into 62 lots of different sizes. For example:

  • 700 MHz: 3 lots of 2×5 MHz each

  • 1800 MHz: 3 lots of 2×1.2 MHz

  • 2100 MHz: 4 lots of 2×5 MHz

  • 2300 MHz (TDD): 5 lots of 10 MHz

  • 2600 MHz (TDD): 19 lots of 10 MHz

  • 3500 MHz (TDD): 28 lots of 10 MHz

Bid Caps & Fair Competition Rules

To prevent spectrum hoarding and maintain healthy competition, PTA has implemented strict caps:

  • Overall cap: 348.5 MHz (40% of total spectrum)

  • Low-band limit: 55 MHz

  • Band-specific caps: 140 MHz for 2600 MHz, 200 MHz for 3500 MHz

Existing operators will have bidding limits based on current holdings, while new entrants may be restricted from certain bands.

These measures are designed to ensure fair access, efficient spectrum use, and robust competition among operators while supporting 5G rollout nationwide.

Impact on 5G Expansion in Pakistan

This auction will enable operators to expand 4G coverage while launching 5G services in urban and suburban areas. Industry experts believe the multi-band, lot-based approach will encourage a competitive market, improve service quality, and accelerate the adoption of next-generation mobile technology across Pakistan.
