Today, 26th Rajab, Friday, Pakistanis will observe Shab-e-Miraj, a night of spiritual reflection, devotion, and religious celebration. To mark the occasion, the Sindh government has announced a public holiday for all government and private educational institutions on 17th January.

Shab-e-Miraj holds a unique place in Islam because it commemorates the ascension of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to the heavens, where he met Allah Almighty in a moment of divine closeness.

Shab-e-Miraj 2026 Observed Across Pakistan

The Journey of Miraj

According to authentic narrations:

  • Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was visited by Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) and other angels at the home of Hazrat Umm Hani.

  • He was taken to Hijr al-Kaaba, then to the Zamzam well, where his heart was purified and filled with faith and wisdom.

  • Prophet ﷺ then embarked on the journey on Buraq, travelling from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa, and further through the heavens to witness Allah’s signs.

The journey of Miraj is divided into three stages:

  1. Earthly Stage: Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa

  2. Heavenly Stage: Masjid al-Aqsa to Sidrat al-Muntaha in the light-filled realms beyond the galaxies

  3. Divine Stage: Beyond Sidrat al-Muntaha, where the Prophet ﷺ met Allah in a sacred and intimate encounter

Three Divine Gifts

After returning from Miraj, Allah granted Prophet Muhammad ﷺ three special gifts:

  1. The five daily prayers for the Muslim Ummah

  2. Surah Al-Baqarah, last three verses as guidance and protection

  3. Divine forgiveness for believers who avoid shirk

This night is therefore considered highly blessed and significant for Muslims, emphasizing spiritual growth, reflection, and connection with Allah.
