The United States has issued a strong warning regarding Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) entering North American markets, following Canada’s recent announcement allowing imports of Chinese EVs at reduced tariffs.
Canada-China Deal for Electric Vehicles
In 2024, Canada had imposed a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs. However, a new agreement announced recently by Prime Minister Mark Carney in Beijing allows up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles to enter Canada with a 6.1% tariff, significantly lowering import barriers.

US Officials React Strongly
US Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffie, stated that allowing Chinese EVs into Canada was a mistake. He emphasized that these vehicles will not be permitted to enter the US market.
Meanwhile, US Trade Representative Jameson Greer clarified that while the deal is limited to Canada and will not directly affect the American auto industry, the decision represents a “serious concern”. He reiterated that the US will maintain strict tariffs on Chinese vehicles to protect domestic auto workers.
Greer also highlighted cybersecurity regulations in the US as a significant barrier, noting that Chinese EVs face strict compliance requirements which make US entry challenging.

Republican Senator Bernie Moreno firmly stated that Chinese cars will not be sold in the US during his lifetime, reflecting bipartisan skepticism toward Chinese automotive imports.
On the other hand, former President Donald Trump had previously expressed interest in having Chinese companies manufacture vehicles in the US, but opposition from both major American political parties has stalled any such initiatives.
What This Means for North American Markets
-
Canada will see increased access to affordable Chinese EVs
-
US maintains strong protective measures for domestic industry
-
Cross-border auto trade may become a contentious issue between the two countries
Industry analysts predict that while Canadian consumers may benefit from lower-cost EVs, US automakers and regulators are unlikely to relax their restrictions on Chinese imports anytime soon.
