Officials from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) have confirmed that solar systems with a combined capacity of 6,000 megawatts have been installed across Pakistan so far.
The update came during a public hearing in Islamabad chaired by NEPRA Chairman Wasim Mukhtar regarding the Net Metering Regulations 2025.

NEPRA officials clarified that the goal of net metering is not revenue generation but promoting renewable energy use. Under the existing framework, wind and solar consumers are allowed to participate.
Biogas to Be Added
Authorities said upcoming regulations will also include biogas in the net metering system, expanding renewable options.

- Contracts for new net metering consumers may be set for 5 years
- Existing consumers will retain their 7-year agreements
- Buy-back rates for existing users will remain unchanged
- For new users, the proposed buy-back price may be aligned with the energy price
