Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has announced a major expansion of the government’s student support initiatives, revealing that students enrolled in private educational institutions will now also receive laptops under the provincial government’s education reform agenda for 2025.

Speaking on the progress of the Education Department, the minister described 2025 as a transformative year focused on improving access, transparency, and quality across Punjab’s education system. The decision to distribute 10,000 laptops to private-sector students marks a significant policy shift, as earlier phases of the scheme were largely limited to public-sector institutions.

Crackdown on Ghost Enrollments and Teacher Shortages

Highlighting administrative reforms, Rana Sikandar Hayat revealed that the department successfully eliminated nearly 2 million ghost enrollments, a long-standing issue affecting resource allocation and planning. In parallel, the government addressed teacher shortages by rationalizing over 26,000 teachers, ensuring a more balanced distribution across schools.

These measures, officials say, have helped improve classroom efficiency and reduced disparities between urban and rural institutions.

Historic Syllabus and Examination Reforms

The minister also pointed to historic syllabus reforms, aimed at modernizing learning outcomes and aligning them with contemporary educational needs. Examination systems have undergone a major transformation, with boards transitioning to e-marking systems, a move designed to increase transparency, reduce delays, and limit human error in assessments.

Education experts believe this shift will enhance student confidence in examination results and reduce complaints related to marking inconsistencies.

Focus on Early Childhood Education and Student Welfare

Early Childhood Education (ECE) remained a key priority in 2025. According to the minister, ECE rooms were established in 10,000 schools, creating age-appropriate learning environments for young students.

In addition, the school nutrition program provided daily meals to 1.1 million children, helping tackle malnutrition and improve attendance rates, particularly in underprivileged areas.

Institutional Upgrades and Governance Improvements

The Punjab government upgraded 268 schools, addressed 37 harassment cases involving teachers, and strengthened accountability mechanisms within educational institutions.

At the higher education level, principals were appointed on merit in 450 colleges, while the appointment process for vice chancellors in 29 public universities has been completed — a move aimed at improving governance and academic leadership.

Why This Laptop Expansion Matters

The inclusion of private-sector students in the laptop scheme is being seen as a major step toward educational equality. Analysts say it reflects the government’s recognition of the growing role private institutions play in Punjab’s education ecosystem.

By combining technology access with structural reforms, officials believe these initiatives will help students better compete in a digitally driven academic and professional environment.

Conclusion

Punjab’s latest education reforms signal a broader, more inclusive approach to student development. From laptops for private students to syllabus modernization and institutional accountability, the government’s 2025 strategy aims to strengthen education at every level — making it one of the most ambitious reform phases in recent years.
