PTA Announces Closure of Inactive Mobile SIMs

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that mobile SIMs inactive for 180 days will be deactivated.

SIMs that have not been used for calls, messages, or internet for 180 days will be blocked and later made available to new users.

Purpose of the Move

According to PTA, the decision aims to:

  • Improve mobile network performance

  • Prevent illegal activities carried out via unused SIMs

  • Reduce fraud and scams originating from inactive numbers

Inactive SIMs have previously been used for various fraudulent activities, causing problems for users, mobile companies, and other institutions.

How It Will Work

  • The policy applies to all mobile operators in Pakistan.

  • SIMs inactive for 180 days will be deactivated fairly and transparently.

  • Deactivated SIMs will then be reissued to new users, making them functional again.

How Users Can Keep Their SIM Active

PTA advises users to use their SIM regularly, through:

  • Making calls

  • Sending SMS

  • Using mobile internet

This will prevent the SIM from being marked as inactive and ensure uninterrupted service.
