State Bank of Pakistan Clarifies Status of New Currency Notes

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has clarified that no new currency notes have been officially released for circulation so far. Existing Pakistani banknotes — Rs. 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 — remain fully valid and legal tender.

SBP officials have also confirmed that viral social media posts showing a “new Rs. 1,000 note” are fake and not issued by the central bank.

Plans for Future Banknote Redesign

SBP and the federal government are working on redesigned currency notes for the future. The planned changes include:

  • Modern security features to prevent counterfeiting

  • Designs reflecting Pakistan’s culture, history, and diversity

  • Themes highlighting women’s role in development and climate change

The federal cabinet has approved new designs for:

✔ Rs. 100
✔ Rs. 500
✔ Rs. 1,000
✔ Rs. 5,000

However, printing will begin only after final approvals and technical preparations.

When Will New Notes Arrive?

Officials indicate that:

  • Multiple denominations may be printed together

  • The process takes time due to advanced security features

  • Notes will be introduced phase by phase, not all at once

  • No official launch date has been announced yet

Fresh Notes vs. New Designs

It is important to understand the difference:

  • Fresh notes = Same old designs, but newly printed and clean

  • New notes = Completely redesigned currency (still in process)

Before festivals like Eid-ul-Fitr, SBP distributes large amounts of fresh-condition notes through commercial banks.

What This Means for Citizens

  • Your current currency notes are still valid

  • Ignore social media rumors about new notes unless confirmed by SBP

  • Redesigned notes will come in the future, gradually

  • Old notes will continue to be accepted even after new ones are issued
